A key priority of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is to support the sustainable development of forests and the competitiveness of industries that use them. In support of this priority, FPInnovations will explore opportunities within both the traditional forest products industry and the emerging bioproducts sectors to increase the economic benefits from BC's entrepreneurial sectors and world-class resources.
In partnership with the BC Coastal Industry and Federal and BC Governments, increase the competitiveness of the Coastal sector and the value extracted from the coastal hem-fir resource by:
- Identifying products that are appropriately suited to the coastal hem-fir resource and as a result, provide a competitive advantage over other wood species alternative products.
- Apply resource characteristics that make hem-fir suitable for a wide array of products.
- Demonstrating the improved value proposition from matching current and new products to the fibre resource; demonstrating opportunities with technologies to improve conversion efficiencies and reduce harvesting and transport costs; determining benefits of log sorting, tracking and managing wood and chip flows.
- Exploring value opportunities in cedar which is harvested and processed alongside hem-fir.
